I know that my Combo 040 makes d/l errors whenever the HD is accessed. I thought I got rid of that problem when I dumped my Kronos controller! Supposedy Terminus has an option for 512 byte disk access when it's running, which is supposed to fix that conflict with the serial port. I haven't tried the serial port on the GVP, but as I recall its buffer is 16K and it BETTER work with their controller! If its buffer fills up, it pauses the connection instead of dropping characters. I want it. Plus, 16k is a lot of buffer...that's about 10 seconds of 1600 cps data! The A3000T. That 'T' is VERY important. Only the Tower models use the same processor modules as the A4000 class. THAT is why I am looking for an A3000T. The A3000 is a nice machine, but is even nicer when out of it's flatbed design. The A0000 flatbed has problems, most important of which is heat. Putting an '040 or other 'hot' chip in an A3000 leads to MBS (Magic Blue Smoke) if you aren't carefull. The A3000T doesn't have that problem. I personaly think that they should bring the A3kT back to production to appease all of those A2k owners who are sick of 16-bit archetecture. In my mind, the A3kT is the best Amiga yet made, scince it is as modular as the A4000, is a little cheaper, has the ZorroIII slots (and an abundance of them at that!) and is generaly an all-around clean machine. These are just a few, but the fourth on the list is most likely what will happen, in my opinion. 1) Sony will buy rights to the chipset and release a machine using the same technologies, but with a different OS (Unlikely) 2) Phillips will buy rights to the chipset and OS and continue with an AGA/CD based game system, and incorperate it into the CD-I (A little more likely) 3) HP will purchase full rights the Amiga line, and continue with the machine from where it stands, including the OS, shelved technologies (AA+, AAA, new floppy drivers, whatnot), and currently released systems. (A bit more likely than the last two) 4) NewTek will gain rights to the OS and chipsets and use them to continue the Toaster, without having to redesign it completely. (More likely than the others) 5) The Amiga will loose support from C=, no one will purchase the chipset or OS, and the Amiga will stay as it stands for a few months, then begin to drift the way of the C=64 and TI. I recently saw Fighter Duel Pro 2 supports it directly. However, I'm not quite sure if it's possibe. I figured an analog adaptor would be necessary, but the only one I've seen (from DigiPrint Inc) says the Thrustmaster is wired differently then "normal" IBM analog joysticks, and is therefore incompatible with the analog interface. So what is needed? Is there a special Thrustmaster interface? If anyone has a phone number, or better yet a FAX number for Jeager Software, I'll give em a call and find out! If FDPro2 is truly usable with the Thrustmaster, then I wanna buy it. If not, then I can wait... Many of us Amiga users are making a strong drive to push the Amiga back into the market. Several 3rd party companies such as Utilities Unlimited and GVP are banding in an attempt to purchase the rights to the Amiga chipset and software. Even if this fails, companies have to be urged to continue the development of and for the Amiga line of computer. What we as users can do is to write letters to the various hardware and software developers urging them to support the Amiga despite Commodore's downfall. Let it be known that we want the Amiga supported, not Commodore. . I am personally compiling a petition of all Amiga users in the world which I will be sending with my letters to various developers. If you would like (PLEASE) to be included in this petition/mailing list, email me with the subject "mail list" and include your full name and full POSTAL address. To further encourage the development of/for the Amiga, PLEASE, write some letters. You'd be amazed at how effective letters are in making companys' decisions . For a listing of addresses of developers to write to, email either me or KDH2074@ZEUS.TAMU.EDU (Kevin). We will soon have a list of non-Amiga developers that we can all write to to encourage ports of their current software. . For those of you that wish to write but don't want to leave your Amiga alone for a second, email me your letter in business letter format and I will print it out myself on an HP Laserjet and mail it myself. I'll even pay postage. Please be sure to clearly state in your letter the company that you are writing the letter to, and your complete postal return address so that I can put that on the envelope too. I don't think it would look good to have tons of letters sent to one company with only my return address. Please support the Amiga as she's still very alive and well. I am having an operation to finish off the previous work that was done. Nothing real seriious, but it will make me feel much better when it is done. What they are doing is restoring my small intestines and reattaching it to my large ingestine, instead of having it come out my side with a bag to catch the waste.(like it is now) They put it this way (temporarly) to prevnt infection when they were doing the serious surgery around my buttocks. Now I will be able to deficate normally, assuming all goes well. So if you are a newmember it may take a while to get you validated. Sorry about that. Call back in a week or so though. He's also duplicated this amazing display of generosity on Trembler BBS. I'd say you picked on the wrong guy. If you want to get on somebody's case, go tear into all those idiots who upload duplicate files, the ones that end their file descriptions with "...", (like that makes sense), and those guilty of the atrocious (and embarassing) spelling in their file descriptions. What do you think the ol' Lex-checker would say if you ran the file descriptions through it? "This message was written by the average 4th-grader", would be my guess. Oh, while we're on the subject, also get on the idiots who designed BBS software that you only get to look at the New files ONCE, and would design a message base that would be virtually impossible to Read Previous Threads, Read Replies, etc, without getting hopelessly lost. For what it's worth, Eugene also uploaded those mega-files to my board, and I promptly threw them in the trash, although I have a gig and a half of empty hard drive space. I just don't like big video clips, think they're a waste of download time, but Eugene and I have an understanding..he knows I'm a picky bastard, but just goes right ahead and uploads anyways, letting me pick and choose what I want. My members never got a chance to complain, not that any of them would have. If Jay wants disk space, he has but to ask, and if you guys can't pitch in a few odd pieces of hardware, my gang certainly can. Eugene: They've now complained that your MODs don't have file descriptions, your pictures are too grainy, and your uploads are too big. One thing that Eugene mentioned to me this morning was that being concerned about 2400 baud callers is a little passe by today's standards,and I totally agree with him. Here's a little perspective for ya: When BBSs were 2400 baud, we mocked and scorned 300 baud callers, and wouldn't have dreamed of letting them on. It would have been ridiculous to let a "one-eighth speed" caller bog down the board. Well, today's standard is 28.8, so a 2400 caller is a ONE-TWELFTH speed caller! How does one justify kicking out the 1/8th speed callers, and letting the much-slower 1/12th callers remain? With 14.4 prices now below $100 (CompUSA), there's just no excuse for remaining in the dark ages. I suppose all the 2400 callers reading this are bouncing up and down with rage, calling me "elitist" (or worse), while all the hi-speed boys are nodding their heads in sage agreement. :) Glad we got the air cleared, bud, you answered my charges with real class. Estimate two-three years. What I said was this: A Supra 28.8 modem costs $260 right now, call it the "initial release price". When 14.4s came out, they were about $260. When 9600 baud modems first came out, they were about $250. When 2400 baud modems first came out, they were about $240. When 1200 baud modems first came out, they were about $220. Without an "official" standard, I would say that's a good way to gauge it. A little accounting for inflation and the graph is straight right up the scale. This is just a private little chat between me and any aspiring SysOps out there. Or any SysOps that are fed up with their software. (C-man's board used to have a "SysOps Only" chat area, tre cool, Mike) Okay. This MAXsBBS stuff continues to impress me, and I've been able to successfully circumnavigate any obstacles I've run into. It does support FidoNet and multiple nodes, I think we got that cleared up, and I'd like to remind you of one feature that's relatively obscure, but is actually quite nifty. That's the putting the file description in the LHA file's FileNote, or "Comment Box", as we called it under 1.3. You set up your DU with the command, and do it right after you arc the files. Then it's automatically logged in as the File Description, which makes the actual logging on of he files a snap. But what makes it so important is that other (hopefully) smart BBS programs in the future will use it, which would eliminate 90% of the hassle of changing software. With all that said, let me mention two additional features that you might find relevant. You may allow the members to attach comments to the File Descriptions, as can be done here. Or, you may not. What's nice about the feature is that it has a nice big OFF switch, so you don't have to use it. Me, I don't give a rat's ass what one or two members think about some file I have on the board, so I definitely have it off. This kind of thing also allows for what I consider to be breaches of board etiquette; leaving your criticism of someone's upload in the perma- nent archives, rather than the message base, where it belongs. Or it might concern a temporary situation, like current available hard drive space, and that's kind of a dumb thing to leave in what's supposed to be a permanent area. But you might decide to try it and see what happens. If you have some particular member who's leaving uncalled-for "messages" in the files area, you can just eliminate his write access to those areas. He won't be able to leave any comment about his own uploads, but perhaps that's just as well. Another nice feature is that you can allot the message bas area a certain amount of drive space, so even if your drive gets full, there's always room for messages. Myself, after somewhat belittling it in my earlier years, have now turned into a partition nut, so my uploads and message files are on different devices, no probs. But if you're not into the partition scene, this makes for a great safety net. For that matter, you can also specify a maximum file size and maximum upload space. A couple more things? Okay, you can specify how many times the member hits te Page SysOp bell before he gets a nasty message. Also, when you get paged, it doesn't just ring the bell, it spits out a message to the user, so you can tell him you'll `be there when you can', so there's no excuse for them hitting the bell over and over and over. I give 'em two tries, on the third I say something terrible and vile. You can use whatever soundfile you want for the Page sound; I use this terrific soft strumming harp. You can also adjust the play rate of the sound sample, just for tweakingness's sake. More? Can't stop now! I wouldn't dream of doing either of these, but they might appeal to you: You can allow the members to Quote messages <blech>, and you can let them store up daily board time in a "time bank". I, personally, think the Quote feature is WAY overused, and I just don't know about this time bank business...just doesn't feel right. If one of the gang needs extra time for some mega-download, they just hit the bell and I give it to them, big deal. Speaking of daily board time, there's a "Lottery" door out there that lets your members GAMBLE with their daily board time! :) I haven't installed it yet, but sounds like a fun idea. Actually, with an hour daily at 14.4, hardly anybody runs out of time. Okay, that's it for now. I'm still tinkering with my own special Max's package; his program and all my auxillery notes, scriptfiles and tools. May not have it done for another week or so (always so hard to let the fledglings leave the nest), but it'll be worth the wait. As a "Sysop's investment", that $260 they're asking for the Supra 28.8 doesn't sound like too much, and Supra's got some kinda SysOp's Discount jobbie you could check out. c. That was "phone line", singular? Not sure what it is in W.C., but it's only $35 installation for the third line here, amortized over three months. At $8 a month (ask for `zero message units' when you order them), each extra line seems well worth it. The 68000 and most Amiga terminal programs support 14400. While I am connected here at 2400 it is because I am connected through PC Pursuit (which goes out of existence next week) and their outdial doesn't handle more than 2400. I connect to most BBSs and services at 14400 using NCOMM and an A1000 (which has been upgraded to 2.1 and 9 Meg of RAM but with the original 8 MHz 68000.). I connect to BIX and Portal through the Internet via telnet and connect to my local internet access provider (indirect.com) at 14400. The only thing I sacrifice with a telnet connection is zmodem uploads. My zmodem download rates are normally over 1600 cps. If your having problems with it call up the Manufacter, I'm sure they have a tech support line. If you have a modern High Speed modem, it will automatically match the correct Baud rate if it is less than your setting. For example, I am set at 19,200, but I have no problem logging on to 300 to 19.2 modems. It also helps to set 'Handshaking' to RTS/CTS. Good Luck... Many consumer groups have tried to research them and found nothing worth writing about. For example, envelope stuffing?? There is no way that can be done cheaper at home than with a machine....... Some time back I ran across an ad about assembling clowns at home, I called the BBB in the town where they were located, bad rep. If an offer appears to ggod to be true, it is. In some cases you can make money assembling something, BUT, the cost of doing it nearly wipes you out. They do not tell you that you have to buy the supplies from them, plus you are not on wage. You sell back to them at THEIR discretion. If they do not like your work, they do not buy, or they will buy back at a reduced cost to "get it off your hands". You can make money at home, but like everything it requires hard work. After all, if it was so easy, wouldn't most people be occupied this way?? And if so, there would be a glut on the market. You can sell only just so many bibs, or wreaths, etc. Some one once replied to one of the letter stuffing ads. They received a letter telling them to send in $10 for full info. I would take advantage of the new RISC processor's speed and develope the Amiga where it would competively run software from other architecture. Picture the first release machine with a 68060 cpu <for AmigaDOS and reverse compatibility> and a card with a PowerPC built on to it in a Zorro3 slot. Mac card uneccessary as the PowerPC will run Mac stuff directly. Then advertise the bejasus out of it as an all-purpose machine. After they buy the puppy we then subvert them to The AmigaDOS Way. Hehehehehehehe... IMHO, the AmigaDOS/GUI interface is the stablest slickest one around. In the meantime the original Amiga Faithful have our faith restored. On the other hand, mass market advertising of computers, ala Coke, has never worked. Even IBM's last campaign failed, not only did their sales not increase, but, they actually lost sales. Their campaign generated a negative image of their systems. The big problem is that computers are not like refrigerators, or cars. Everyone knows they need those, but which one? Most people that do not have computers do not understand why they need one, if they do. So trying to sell the merits of the Amgia over PCs is wasted effort, the differences mean nothing, and they do not know why they need it. If you look at current computer marketing, you find the big bucks spent only where people looking for a system would look. All the computer ads are in either computer mags, or, occasionally, in media where the business decision makers are, i.e. Wall Street Journal, Golf tournaments, etc. You also see the ads in the respective niche markets, so magazines dealing with graphic arts, video, dtp, etc. will see ads for Macs, and even PCs. If the Amiga is to advertise, this would be the wisest way to spend the money. Go after the people who would understand the difference, and in particular, those for whom the Amiga is a solid alternative to the PCs and Macs where THEIR work is concerned. Professionals are not as interested in OSs, hardware fine points, etc. as they are in whether the system can do what they want at a lower cost than their competition. Unquestionably, the Amiga is a key player in video and Multi-media right now. It is not too strong in graphic art or dtp, compared to the Macs - but it could be, it has all the elements necessary. We just need the programs that can top the Mac stuff in particular, and PC stuff in general. Even the games consoles do not advertise in the mass media - EXCEPT at Christmas. They concentrate on areas where the players are, childrens shows, game magazines, etc. While I do not think general advertising on, say TV would help, it would help to bring the Amiga name before the public as much as possible. Like press releases about the use of the Amiga in Babylon 5, DSV, and other programs and films. Possibly christmas campaign "help" if there is still a low end market. The new owners of the Amgia, whoever they maybe, ought to take a leaf out of Apple's marketing, and promote the Amiga in schools. Have special education discounts, encourage Amiga developers to create site licenses for their programs. Admittedly, this last is iffy, since schools are notorious for pirating software, the staff, not students, after all it is for the "cause" of education and budgets are tight. But it may still be a viable avenue to explore. And, naturally, AGRESSIVE marketing in video, multi-media, kiosks, and hopefully graphic arts and DTP. I have to admit that this whole Amiga adventure has more twists and turns than anything Infocom could have turned out :) On a different note, is HT electronics still a decent place to look around?? Bear in mind there is nothing within 3 hours (@ 75 mph, :) to find Amgia stuff. I have been tempted to take a day and drive up, about 5 hrs to check it out.. I've always said that a technological device would only sell well if my mom would use it. My mom plays Bingo and watched Geraldo in the afternoon. What software could be run on an Amiga to attract a person like that? My dad uses an Amiga 2 days out of the whole year -- to do his taxes in a check writing program. I have to re-teach him all about using a mouse and keyboard every year. We somehow have to turn these "gizmos" into everyday appliances. We have to remember also, most people can't program their own VCR. The world is doomed. The computer illiterate even have problems with the Macs once they get beyond the elementary stuff. One thing people forget, you may be able to make an easy interface, but the subject of the software may be so inherently difficult, that an easy interface cannot overcomethe difficult subject. Image processing, ray-tracing are obvious things which come to mind :) Do not blame people for not being able to program VCRs, blame the manufacturers. I believe it was in the Smithsonian a while back, there was an article about control design. It pointed out that most control designs are miserable. Too few controls are designed to do too many controls, too many controls. Poor selection in labeling colors, control knob shape, size. A classic example of poor design is the car stereo system, especially the more advanced ones. They have knobs that are too small, too invisible, etc. Even the most mechanically gifted have had trouble with VCR programming. One example, my mom has a VCR with a remote. This remote is a very nice interface for porgramming the VCR. it guides you through every step. Even she could program with no trouble. BUT, heaven help you if you make a mistake. Once the remote is programmed, you transmit the data to the VCR. Fine. It is so easy, it is incredible, you would think erasing the program or making a change would be as easy, right?? If you said yes, then you flunk out. To make ANY change to the program, you have to erase it, and start over. No big deal, EXCEPT, your cannot erase the program from the remote! You have to go over to the VCR, open a panel, read the manual to remember which buttons do the job. You then locate the button to cycle through the programs, then hit delete. Neither button is labeled, correspondingly. Each one has multiple functions, so even the choice is not intuitive........ SIGH ....... Idiots!!!!! If they made it so easy to program, why in the world didn't they make it easy to correct or erase!?!?!?!?!? It was an idiot design. All VCRs, and high tech equipment seem to be designed with the same blend of intelligence and absolute stupidity. The other day I had the opportunity to drive a rental Buick, I think Le Sabre. Nice interior. BUT, guess where the headlight switch was??? On the steering wheel stalk? No. On the Dashboard?? No. They were in the door!!! I found the parking brake release, but not the parking brake....fortunately, I did not have to park on a; hill. The whole car was a study in nice touches, mixed with stupid, and potentially dangerous, touches. Will we ever learn?????????? Well, the deal is, it's not really done by "zones", it's done by prefixes. There are prefixes in Zone 2 that are "local", some that are not, ditto Zone 1. All of Zone 3's LD, but not to the West S.J. number, praise be. That little call-forwarding plan they offer is pretty neat...doesn't actually have to be set up at any location, they just do it downtown, and the meager five bucks they want to hook it up can't be beat. The problem I've had with that line is the noise, but there's nothing that can be done about that...it's not the "line", per se, it's the "switching station", or whatever they call it. Anyone that lives in the Milpitas area and has called here over the years knows just what I'm talking about. I think I averaged a completely clean line about one call in two when I was living there; same deal, not the line, it's the central relay station. While I have no experience with personal illness like yours, I met many dialysis patients during a summer that I worked in a hospital dialysis ward. No fun at all would be a generous characterization of the process.... As far as you are concerned, perhaps, the Amiga is a past achievement. Maybe so, but there are lots of us who get major enjoyment from these machines, and you get a substantial part of the credit. From the near mythology that has come to surround the Amiga has come a sort of deification of you and the others who made it happen. And the user community bears you an awful lot of goodwill. I know that I'm speaking for many when I wish you the best, and I hope that the best includes enjoying life while you can. Because if you will notice, no matter what line you log on at, it says '(This is the 1200/2400 line). He is running multiple lines with the same one, as far as I know. I recently saw Fighter Duel Pro 2 supports it directly. However, I'm not quite sure if it's possibe. I figured an analog adaptor would be necessary, but the only one I've seen (from DigiPrint Inc) says the Thrustmaster is wired differently then "normal" IBM analog joysticks, and is therefore incompatible with the analog interface. So what is needed? Is there a special Thrustmaster interface? If anyone has a phone number, or better yet a FAX number for Jeager Software, I'll give em a call and find out! If FDPro2 is truly usable with the Thrustmaster, then I wanna buy it. If not, then I can wait... I used to be a CoSysop to a DLG board, and can suggest dropping to DOS and issuing the FIXUSERS command as that will rebuild the user data. Then, everything should be fine and dandy. Like, no MODs over 150k, game demos over 300k, only the best Euro thingies, whatever. I someone uploads something that's too big, just say `thanks', and instruct him as to the various size limits. The only other I know of is gzip, which I suspect is to a large extent the SAME program, and has less support for the Amiga port. PKAZip is worthless... As someone actively working on maintaining the Amiga Zip and UnZip utilities, this is an issue that concerns me. I just wrote two assembly functions for UnZip 5.1 (which goes with Zip 2.0.1) and sped it up considerably. I hope they'll be in the next release.
